back from a week's vacation, from the frigid chill of china to the sunny warmth of singapore. during which my family and i visited macau, zhuhai, guangzhou and panyu. unfortunately ben had school so couldnt come along.
the trip back to my motherland (hurhur) was a real eye-opener. china's the land of overenthusiastic, overly loud, and overzealous ppl. when they say that its the most populous country in the world, they definitely arent jokin. theres not a single alley or street where the chinaman isnt around, sometimes it gets so crowded ya feel dizzy. chinas also the place to get super-genuine-lookalike fakes of anything under the sun. nike shoes for s$11?! the entire 'lost' season two dvd set for s$30?! they even fake electronic gadgets like ps2 and psp!! my faith in the branding system has been completely shattered. oh and i witnessed a demonstration in macau too haha, something about the wto in hongkong. culturally, this trip has also enriched me greatly as i got to see ancient artifacts from the shang dynasty, han dynasty, and even the warring states period. it makes me wanna laugh when during ssa2211 derek hengs so proud of his 16th century pieces of crap excavated from the fort canning area.
on a serious note though, i have new found respect for the chinese. china's no doubt on the rise. bridges can be built overnight, buildings erected in a blink of an eye. to those who think little of the chinese in school maybe you are all greatly mistaken. the chinese tenacity and dilligence will one day be a force to be reckoned with. china does not need us, we need china, really, with china's history and people, singapore's really a speck of dust. coming from an anglophile like me, its gotta mean something.
