WHEN WELFARE IS THE ONLY WAYi was approached by an aunty selling tissue paper in a hawker centre again today. dont get me wrong, i don mind nor feel in the least bit uneasy. its jus that she was about moms age and kinda looked like her, a bit lah..
the other day when i was in a carpark in toa payoh, this old lao aunty came knocking on my window screen asking for loose change. she went on telling me in mandarin about how sad she was. her mandarin super heavily teochew accented so i couldnt really understand what she was saying, not that im an ace mandarin student also la. but if i catch her drift, she was telling me about how she doesnt have any kin nor friends and cant find a job. she was all "aunty hen3 ke3 lian2 hor.. aunty hen3 ke3 lian2 hor.. mei2 you3 ren2 yao4 zuo4 wo3 de pen2 you3.." so sad i also dunno what to say to comfort her. after that she jus went on to every other parking car to ask for change, ignoring her safety.
yes yes they always say how welfare will be abused and how people are bad and will con you of your money. Lee Kuan Yew you dare to say to my face this two aunties are cons? you say every society has its fair share of marginalised citizens. of course ya say that la, ya are not marginalised what. ask ya to don play retiree golf for a day and beg for change in a car park ya want anot? people say s'pore has the best government, yes only in making the rich richer, if the imf convention made all singaporeans richer then why are there still marginalised citizens. only reason i can see is that the government is inept in social services.
